Vincent Willem van Gogh (1853-1890), Dutch post-impressionist painter mostly of landscapes, portraits, self-portraits and still lifes, developed his own modernist style using bold colours and expressive brushwork. He produced a large number of paintings, especially during the last two years of his life, but was unsuccessful commercially, suffered from mental illness and poverty, and committed suicide at the age of 37.

Diego Rodriguez de Silva y Velazquez (1599-1660), Spanish Golden Age painter, leading artist at the court of King Philip IV of Spain and Portugal. He painted many portraits, as well as classical, religious and genre subjects.

Johannes (also known as Jan) Vermeer (1632-1675), Dutch genre painter based in Delft, specialising in scenes of middle-class life, usually in domestic interiors. The quality of his work was not recognised for two centuries after his death, but he is now regarded as one of the greatest painters of the Dutch Golden Age.
